Honor Mission, Koonz, May 18, 2012

Sadly we are called to stand for John Daniel Koonz who served our country honorably in the U.S. Navy serving during World War II aboard the Submarine Chaser PC-1083 as a Radioman 1st Class, may he rest in peace. This Hero was the father of our own PGR member and part of CT PGR Leadership Jay Koonz. Jay, we are very sorry for your loss…. We will provide a Flag Line at the funeral home where full Military Honors will be performed. Sr. RC Jack Casey and Sr. RC Bruce Eble will act as dual RCIC’s and have flags on site. Note: This is one of two missions at the same time and date with the other in East Hampton. Please choose the mission that is best for you. HOTH Mission – Brian Bill – May 12, 2012

Note: For those who may not know what HOTH is in the subject line, it stands for Help on the Home Front, and it is how we classify some events that support Veterans and 1st Responders that are not Honor missions.

We are very proud to have been asked to participate in an Honor and Remember flag presentation for CPO Brian Bill, US Navy

 On May 12 at the Spartyka Wounded Warrior 5K – CT Trail Run, the Connecticut Chapter of Honor and Remember will present a personalized Honor and Remember Flag to the family of Brian Bill. Bill was killed in action during Operation Enduring Freedom when the CH-47 Chinook helicopter in which he was riding was shot down on August 6, 2011. The crash in Wardak  province, Afghanistan killed 31 United States service members, including a Navy SEAL dog.

 Brian graduated from Naval Aviation Technical Training Command in Pensacola, Fla., in November 2001 and Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL Training in Coronado, Calif., in November 2002. He joined his East Coast-based SEAL team in June 2003. Bill’s decorations include four Bronze Stars with combat ‘V’ device for valor, including one for extreme heroism; Joint Service Commendation Medal with combat ‘V’ device for valor; Purple Heart Medal; Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal; Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal; two Combat Action Ribbons; two Presidential Unit Citations; Navy Unit Citation; Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Rifle Expert Medal and Pistol Expert Medal.

 Of note, there will be multiple military units present, family members of Brian’s as well as significant media coverage.

 We will stand a flag line at the beginning of this race when the flag will be presented to this hero’s family in front of all the runners and guests.

 Sr. RC Kevin Wakely will be RCIC and flags will be on site courtesy of Flag Captain Don Camden.

Honor Mission – Patrick Massaro – May 4, 2012

This is one of two missions we are called to stand on Friday May 4, on opposite ends of the state, this one in the New Haven area, the other in the Norwich area.

Sadly we are called to stand for Patrick Massaro, USN, WWII veteran, who served his country honorably in France from May 1944 – Dec 1945.

Mr. Massaro’s family has asked we stand a flag line at the cemetery.

Ride Captain Daniel Regan will be RCIC and flags will be on site.

Honor Mission – Eric Omdahl – Apr 28, 2012

Patriot Guard and associates,

Sadly we are called to stand for Eric Omdahl, who served our country honorably in both the US Army in Vietnam and US Navy, may he rest in peace.  

Eric served in Vietnam with honor and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered during operations against enemy forces. Additional awards included the Vietnam Service medal, National Defense Service medal, Combat infantryman badge, Special Forces Qualified badge, Combat Diver and several more. 

Additionally, Eric proudly served as a sworn volunteer Patrol Officer with the Greenwich Special Police Division. In 1980 he was promoted to Sergeant in the organization and was in charge of a squad of several officers. Again he distinguished himself as a dedicated officer who spent many of his evenings away from his family protecting the citizens of Greenwich while on his Police patrols.

We will stand a flag line at the church.

RC John Bittner will be RCIC and have flags on site.
