Patriot Guard Riders Dec/Jan 2011  (Article by Jay D Koonz)

The Connecticut Patriot Guard Riders started off this issue with a Escort Mission on Nov 7th, escorting Ari Cullers, a recent OEF KIA, from the Groton Airport to the funeral home in Old Saybrook, a solemn but moving occasion. Members would also provide a flag line at the funeral service on Nov 10th at Camp Niantic. On Nov 9th, we had a pair of missions. Several members provided for Marine LCpl John Malloy who was returning home for his sister’s wedding. The others attended an Honor Mission in Durham for Navy Cmdr. Dr Leo Willet, who served 17 years including Chief of Orthopedic Surgery on the hospital ship USS Repose during the Vietnam War, and afterwards as Assistant Chief of Orthopedic Service and Head Amputee Ward at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital.

On Nov 21st, we stood another Honor Mission at Camp Niantic for Adjutant General Maj. Gen William Cugno who served our country honorably in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and was the recipient of the Silver Star. He was also a member of the FL Patriot Guard Riders. The last mission of November, on the 28th, was another Honor Mission. This one in Killingworth for Henry Balestriere, a WWII Army veteran.  On Dec 1st, there was another Honor Mission in New London for Roger Bromley Arnold, who served our country honorably in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and was a Purple Heart recipient.

R.I.P. to all the heroes we stood for this month. We hope we provided some measure of comfort to their family and friends as we stood to show our final respect for their service to this country.
