From Chilli Cook-Off

Statewide Announcement

Patriot Guard and Associates:

As we move into the final swing of the holidays and into 2014, I would like to thank each and every one of you for what you do for our Veterans, First Responders and their families!

This was a busy year for PGR of CT and we had some great accomplishments:

    • Well over 150 missions this year and this does not include the many “attend on your own” events that we do participate in.
    • Very successful major events: Chili Cook- off with Mad Mike Freedman in the lead; Wreaths Across America with Skip Petras leading the event this year and our Spring Ride with Paul Novicelli leading. Thanks to these leaders and to so many members for their support at these critical events that help us to help our Veterans and First Responders!
    • A tremendous effort with our plaques and challenge coins delivered on every Honor Mission. Big thanks to Kevin Wakely and Greg young for their continued leadership on this.
    • A fun-filled Flag build and staging of our Flags in various areas of the state with our Flag captain Don Camden at the helm.
    • An increase in our overall membership.

Leadership:

  • Some terrific work by our social media team to keep us all informed both on our website and Facebook. Thanks to Laurie Gadbois and her outstanding team for all the work they do daily.
  • I’d also like to acknowledge all the Ride Captains for the work they do both behind the scenes and out front on each and every mission!
  • A big thanks for our Treasurer Marcia Young for her professionalism and excellent skills in keeping us all in line with the books!
  • Last and never least, I would like to thank and recognize our own Jack Casey for his induction into the CT Veteran Hall of Fame this year. A true Patriot and Veteran advocate, he is a tireless fixture at every event and appreciated by all that he interacts with. Congrats!

But most importantly, the difference each one of you make for others with your service, honor and professionalism. It is the look on the faces of those we serve at every mission that is truly rewarding and humbling.

I thank you all and wish you and yours the very best during this holiday season.

WHO:  Purple Heart Homes Holds Welcome Home Ceremony for Joe Recupero
WHAT:  Welcome Home Ceremony for Vietnam Veteran Joe Recupero
WHEN:  Saturday, December 21, 2013 at 11:00 AM
WHERE:  7 Forest Lane Canton, CT
WHY:  Renovations to the home have been completed – come welcome Joe home, shower him with love and gifts and join in some holiday cheer

Purple Heart Homes will hold a “Welcome Home” Ceremony for Vietnam Veteran Joe Recupero Saturday, December 21, 2013 at 11:00 AM at 7 Forest Lane in Canton, CT.

Canton residents, friends and neighbors in surrounding communities are invited to join  the Welcome Home Ceremony to shower Joe with love and gifts. This will be a joyous occasion to celebrate Joe’s 63rd Birthday, the completion of the renovations and the spirit of the holiday season.

Renovations on the home located at 7 Forest Lane began Friday October 4 led by General Contractor Steve Thomas working with Sap Works Construction in Manchester, CT to make Joe’s  home safe and barrier free so he can age in place without have to consider costly alternatives.

A 300 square foot addition was added to Joe’s home that includes a handicap accessible bathroom with a roll in shower, Jacuzzi tub for therapy, energy upgrades that includes new insulation and windows,  new roof, an updated kitchen, wider doorways, ramp out the front door and moved his driveway for easier wheel chair access.

Joe Recupero suffers from severe Parkinson’s as a result of exposure to Agent Orange, a defoliant used by the U.S. Military during the Vietnam War from 1961-1971.

The renovations to the home, made possible by a grant to Purple Heart Homes from the Home Depot Foundation  to be used for older Service Connected Disabled veterans that own their own home as well as additional contributions from individuals, donations of materials and labor from professional trades men from the area.

Join Purple Heart Homes on Saturday, December 21 at 11:00 AM.  A light lunch will be provided and those attending will be able to get a tour of the renovations that were dome to make Joe Recupero’s home handicap accessible.

Several of our volunteers gathered on October 4-5 and were aware of all the cameras.  5-hour Energy produced a video called Amazing People that featured Dale and John – Purple Heart Homes Co-founders — here is the video they produced: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=575ssR2h1xE&feature=share&list=UULAcNrfZd3Nstptyuf54OVg

And Encore.org that sponsors the Purpose Prize was also on site.  I am honored to say that I won the $100,000 Purpose Prize presented by Symetra for Future Promise.  Here is the video they produced:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8fMWXoZxmo&feature=share

We hope to see you next Saturday morning. We can’t thank our volunteers enough for being on site at Joe’s to hepl us complete this project so we can have our Welcome Home Celebration in time to truly be home for the holidays.
